It seems like yesterday that we made the decision to buy our 15 acres (about 6 hectares) of Australian bush land. In fact it has only been a few years, but with so much to do when we arrived, and with almost as much still remaining, time has become a bit of a blur.
This was a very big move for us having lived in city apartments most of our adult lives, and enjoyed successful corporate careers. However, confronted with increasing traffic and noise, and a desire to enjoy life more, we began a search for some country acreage.
Initially we thought we would be able to have the best of both worlds and maintain a city base, while spending the weekends in the country. Of course once we started looking at some properties it became obvious that it would have to be a complete change or no change.
We settled on a hilly, tree covered block in the hinterland midway between Brisbane and the Gold Coast. There is a cleared paddock of a couple of acres facing the road, then two pretty summer creeks, before a very steep path to the house which affords great views across surrounding valleys.
As the house is at the end of our driveway, which is about 500 metres from the road, we are largely shielded from noise and unwanted visitors. We chose the acreage for the location, and the tranquillity it offers, and we have not regretted this decision.
The home and most of the property’s infrastructure needed a lot of work which has sometimes been challenging.
There was another important reason for deciding on this lifestyle change and location, and that was the opportunity it offered to do some real gardening. We have the space for growing our own food (organically of course) as well as an opportunity to regenerate the native species, while allowing for some special garden areas around the house.
We will be sharing our journey with you and hopefully providing some valuable information based on our experiences. This is very much a work in progress albeit one that is providing us with much joy and satisfaction.
