The discovery of a few insect pests in the garden does not mean that all your plants are doomed to devastation. It could be quite the reverse, merely suggesting that the garden is supporting a healthy balance of nature.
Insects play an essential role in the web of life. They are an amazingly diverse group of animals that have conquered almost every environment on earth.
In Australia alone there are an estimated 85,000 different species of insects, with more being discovered all the time. Insects, along with other animals like spiders, snails and millipedes are all invertebrates.
Regardless of their role in the garden, insects are fascinating. Many have bizarre body shapes and structures, some are scary and some are just plain beautiful.
The best solution to pest problems, however, is maintaining sound garden practices like building healthy soil, rotating crops, and cleaning up your garden at the end of the season. There are also times when you need a little help and in the following articles I describe how I have approached the management of pests on my vegetables and fruit trees.
